Welcome Day Ph.D. in Economics and Management

Luigi Zingales

The Welcome Day of the Ph.D. programme in Economics and Management offered by the Department of Economics and Management “Marco Fanno” of the University of Padua, will take place on Monday, 27 October 2025 at 9.30 AM at the Sala della Carità in Padua.

We are pleased to welcome Luigi Zingales, Robert C. McCormack Distinguished Service Professor of Entrepreneurship and Finance at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, as the keynote speaker for the inaugural lecture of the Ph.D. Programme in Economics and Management.

In his lecture "Citizen Investors: How the Democratization of Stock Ownership Can Improve Capitalism", Professor Zingales will examine how, despite its success in lifting much of the world out of poverty, capitalism now faces a crisis of legitimacy as many young people reject it for failing to reflect their values, and how new values can be integrated into the system through the active role of individual investors, particularly in countries with defined-contribution pension systems.

Luigi Zingales' research interests span from corporate governance to financial development, from political economy to the economic effects of culture. He co-developed the Financial Trust Index, which is designed to monitor the level of trust that Americans have toward their financial system. In addition to holding his position at Chicago Booth, Zingales is currently a faculty research fellow for the National Bureau of Economic Research, a research fellow for the Center for Economic Policy Research, and a fellow of the European Governance Institute. He is also the director of the Stigler Center for the Study of the Economy and the State. Zingales also serves on the board of ProMarket and is the co-host of the podcast Capitalisn't. In 2014 he was the President of the American Finance Association.
