This paper contradicts the conventional wisdom that increasing firm-level entrepreneurship (entrepreneurial orientation) is always beneficial for innovation performance. It explains why changes from a conservative to a more entrepreneurial orientation are challenging for firms' pursuing innovation. The work also suggests how firms constrained by limited internal resources can address these challenges by searching for and utilizing external knowledge. These considerations are especially meaningful for firms with limited resources for managerial attention and learning capacity, such as SMEs or young firms.
