The Department of Economics and Management (dSEA) of the University of Padova is one of the leading research institutions in Italy for economics and business science. The last national research assessment that covered the period 2011-2014 ranked the University of Padova first in the scientific area including economics, business science and statistics. This result fits well with the first rank achieved by the University of Padova in 7 out of 14 scientific areas considered in the assessment. More recently, the DEM has been also financed by the Italian Ministry of University and Research under the program “Departments of Excellence” for 2018-22.

Internationally, According to the QS World University Rankings, the Department of Economics and Management features among the top-150 departments in terms of research productivity worldwide, with a consistent upward trajectory in the last years.

The DEM offers an international Ph.D. program with a long tradition of quality and success that complements the department's offer of bachelor and master degrees.

The PhD programme in Economics and Management

The Department offers a full-time, three-year advanced doctoral programme for students who want to achieve an outstanding training in Economics and Management. Thanks to a well-established international research and teaching experience, over the years our students have been hired by prestigious organizations such as University of Exeter Business School, Tuck School of Business, University of Copenhagen, University of New South Wales, the OECD, the World Bank, University of Groningen, Bank of Italy, and several Italian Universities.

The programme takes place mainly in Padova although some courses are organized in collaboration with the University of Verona in order to form wider classes and to bring together expertise and excellence of both institutions. The PhD consists of two curricula: Economics and Management.

For both the curricula, the PhD teaching activity takes place during the first year and is divided into 3 terms (refer to the PhD guide below for further details on teaching activity). By the end of the first year students have to identify a supervisor and the topic of their thesis, and to write a summer paper.

During the second and third year, students are supposed to work on their thesis: part of this period (at least 3 months) should be spent abroad. Over the years, our PhD students have spent visiting periods in outstanding universities such as, for example, London School of Economics, Penn University, University of Chicago, University of Toulouse e Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona. Moreover, PhD students can take advantage of the exchange agreements of the University of Padova and the Department of Economics and Management with international partners like the Boston University and the Michigan University.
